Step one: which Switch do they have?
Nintendo sells Mario Kart World as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. It will not run on an original Switch, a Switch Lite or a Switch OLED — there is no version for them. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs on all of those, and Nintendo lists it as Supported on the Switch 2 as well, meaning it behaves there just as it does on the older console.
So if you’re not certain which machine is in the house, 8 Deluxe is the only safe blind buy of the two. What Mario Kart World actually adds
The headline change is that the courses are joined together. Instead of a menu of separate tracks, you race from one course to the next along roads that span a single world — and in Free Roam you can simply drive around that world at your own pace, finding things, with no race at all. That mode is quietly perfect for a younger child or a nervous beginner who finds racing against others stressful.
The other big addition is Knockout Tour: back-to-back courses with five checkpoints, where anyone who isn’t placed high enough at a checkpoint is out. Grand Prix races now put 24 racers on the track, and online play goes up to 24 people. For someone who races online most evenings, that’s a real step up. For a family that plays on a Sunday afternoon, it matters much less.
Why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still a great present
It has 48 courses in the box, it’s rated E for Everyone, and it’s the game the whole Switch generation grew up racing. Nothing about it has gone stale for a family.
Two things have made it better value since it came out. First, the Booster Course Pass adds 48 more courses as paid downloadable content — and anyone with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership can play them at no extra cost. Nintendo is clear about the catch: unless the pass was bought separately, those courses stop working if the membership ends. Second, on September 1, 2026 Nintendo released a free update that lets a single Switch 2 run eight-player split-screen, with enough controllers, plus sharper visuals and faster loading. For a big family on a Switch 2 that already owns World, that makes 8 Deluxe a genuinely different party game rather than a lesser one.
The duplicate problem
Both of these games are, in their own generation, the one almost everybody already has. Mario Kart World was sold in a bundle with the Switch 2, so plenty of consoles arrived with it. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been on Switch shelves since 2017. Neither makes a good surprise for a keen player without a quiet check first — ask a partner, a parent or a sibling.
If they turn out to own the one you’d have bought, don’t reach for the other one by default. An extra pair of controllers, or a year of Nintendo Switch Online for the whole household, often lands better — both are in the picks above. The hidden cost: controllers
Every racer on the sofa needs a controller, and a console ships with just one pair of Joy-Con. Our family games guide does the controller maths for a four-player household; the short version is that a third and fourth racer means buying more, and Nintendo’s eight-player split-screen on a Switch 2 comes with the words “and enough controllers” for a reason. Joy-Con 2 controllers are made for the Switch 2 and won’t work as controllers on an original Switch, so match the controller to the console exactly as you match the game.
