Can You Return a Video Game? What Gift Buyers Need to Know

Most gift guides stop at the purchase. This page is about the other end — the moment you realize the game is for the wrong console, or the recipient already owns it, or the code has gone into the wrong account.

The good news is that gaming gifts are more fixable than people assume, if you act before anything is opened or typed in. The bad news is that after that point the rules tighten quickly. Here they are, in the order that matters.

Sealed physical games: the easy case

A sealed game is an ordinary retail return. Amazon’s own returns policy allows most items to be sent back within 30 days of delivery, and a shrink-wrapped game with its receipt is the least complicated version of that.

Practical advice: don’t unwrap it to check. If you suspect you’ve bought the wrong platform, the box art and the colored strip along the top tell you, and the barcode area names the console. Opening it to be sure is the thing that turns an easy return into a difficult one.

Opened physical games: goodwill territory

Once the seal is broken, you’re relying on the retailer’s discretion. Amazon’s policy is explicit that software and video games which have been opened, activated or had their codes used may be charged a restocking fee of up to 100% — which is a polite way of saying you may get nothing back.

That isn’t retailers being difficult. A game box with a one-use code inside is functionally empty once that code has been claimed, and there’s no way to check from outside whether it has been.

Digital codes: the line is redemption

An unredeemed code may be returnable, depending on where it was bought and how it was delivered. A redeemed code is gone — it attaches permanently to the account that used it, and there is no mechanism anywhere to move it to a different account.

Digital purchases on each platform

If the game was bought inside a console store rather than as a code, each company has its own rule and they differ a lot.

PlayStation. Sony’s cancellation policy allows a game or add-on to be canceled within 14 days of purchase, provided the download or stream hasn’t been started. Once it has started downloading, it isn’t refundable unless it’s faulty.

Nintendo. The strictest of the three: Nintendo’s own policy states that payments through Nintendo Account services are final, and that it doesn’t provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases except where the law requires it. Treat an eShop purchase as permanent.

Xbox. Microsoft runs a self-service refund request page for digital purchases, and each request is assessed against its own refund terms. It’s the most forgiving of the console stores in practice, but it is a request rather than a right.

Steam. Valve’s policy is refunds within two weeks of purchase and under two hours of playtime. Unredeemed gifts can be refunded inside that window, and a redeemed gift can be refunded on the same terms if the recipient starts the request — with the money going back to whoever paid. How to buy so a mistake stays fixable

• Include a gift receipt. It costs nothing and it moves the problem from “can you prove where this came from” to a normal exchange.
• Buy from a retailer with a returns process rather than an individual marketplace seller, especially for anything expensive.

If it’s too late to return anything

It happens. A physical game they already own can be given away, sold second-hand, or kept as a spare for a household with two consoles. A redeemed code cannot be recovered, and the honest thing to do is say so rather than let them feel awkward about it.
