How to pick for a mixed group
Picture the least-gamer person in the room ending up with your gift. If they’d still be pleased, it’s a good white elephant pick. That test rules out most games and all console-specific accessories, and it’s why the list leans toward things that are simply nice objects with a gaming theme: a light, a plush, a LEGO set, a board game everyone at the table already knows how to play.
The exceptions are worth explaining. Untitled Goose Game is the funniest gift on this page — you are a horrible goose ruining a village’s day — but it’s a Nintendo Switch game, so it only lands if your group has several Switch owners. And an Xbox gift card is the safest possible gift for an Xbox owner and a shrug for anyone else. Bring those two to a group you know; bring the console-free picks to a group you don’t.
Wrapping matters more than usual
Because the gift is judged before it’s opened, a box that looks intriguing gets picked earlier and stolen more. The controller clock and the LEGO set both come in distinctive boxes that wrap well. A gift card in an envelope reads as an afterthought — if you go that route, tuck it inside something small and silly so there’s a reveal.
Under $25 or under $30?
Most white elephant limits land at $20, $25 or $30.
