Question one: do they already subscribe?

This settles most cases. Game Pass is the sort of thing people either have permanently or have never tried.

If they don’t subscribe, Game Pass is the more generous gift by a wide margin. For roughly the price of one new game they get a few months of hundreds, and if they enjoy it they’ll thank you for the introduction. It’s particularly good for someone who has recently got an Xbox and owns almost nothing to play on it.

If they do subscribe, a Game Pass code isn’t wasted — it extends their existing membership, which saves them money later. But it feels less like a present, because their experience of using the console doesn’t change on the day. In that situation the gift card is more satisfying: they can buy the specific game they’ve been eyeing that isn’t in the library.

Question two: are they a one-game person?

Plenty of players spend nearly all their time in a single online game — a shooter, a football game, a world they play with the same friends every week. Those games make most of their money from things bought inside them: currency, passes, cosmetic items.

Game Pass does nothing for that. A gift card does exactly that. If you’ve heard them talk about one game and only one game, the card is the right gift, and the same logic applies to a Fortnite player and V-Bucks or a Roblox player and Robux.

The honest downside of a subscription gift

It ends. Three months from now the library goes away unless somebody keeps paying, and some people find that unsatisfying in a way a bought game isn’t. A minority of recipients — often older ones — genuinely dislike being given something that starts a recurring cost, even if there’s no obligation to continue.

For gift cards, the sensible approach is to match the amount to a real purchase rather than a round number. A card that covers most of a new game but not all of it makes the recipient top it up; a card that comfortably covers one is a better feeling.
